Around the middle of the fourth century, legionaries were issued a new
style of armor combining the lorica segmentata with the muscled cuirass.
Expansion of this style of armor with additional pieces eventually
gave rise to the full plate c. AD 500, illustrated in such documentaries
as
Excalibur (1981). This illustration shows a typical legionary of c. 400.
